Student Assistant General Work Guidelines

If you cannot make your scheduled work commitment, notify us either by leaving a voice mail at 474-6344 or by sending an email to BOTH Richard (fnrbv@uaf.edu) and Kim (fnkea@uaf.edu). Please note your hours in the log book; all adjustments to your schedule should be noted in the log book as well.

You get a 15 minute paid break every four hours, and are required to take a lunch break if you work more than four hours. Lunch breaks can be between 30 minutes and one hour, and they are not paid breaks. Be sure to tell Richard or Kim how long you will take for lunch. Let someone know when you take a break.

The fridge, microwave, coffee maker and teakettle are for everyone to use. Please help keep the area clean. Only use filtered water in the coffeepot and teakettle so they won't get all crusty. We provide coffee, tea, coffeemate, and occasional goodies for everyone to use, although we always appreciate it if you help out. Drinks are permitted at the computers only if there are no original or archival materals anywhere near. Never set food or drink on a piece of equipment or on a table that has something valuable on it. Always wash your hands before you handle anything.

The tall cabinet by the sink is for your personal belongings.

Policies:

Our equipment here is very sensitive and very expensive. We have the best scanning equipment in Alaska, and our printers are the best in Fairbanks with the software we use with them. Please be very careful and use common sense. If something breaks or goes wrong, tell someone as soon as possible. We understand that accidents do happen, however, and we won't ever come down on someone for being honest, but we do expect everyone to take responsibility for their own actions.

Your own homework and school art projects may be worked on here in the lab (on your own time, of course), but only if no one else needs to use the equipment and it is OK'd first with Richard or Kim. You may also use our printers but you will be responsible for providing all your own paper and we may charge you a small fee to cover ink costs. You may not do any work for anyone else, only your own personal work. The most important thing is to make sure Richard or Kim know about what you're doing up front so there won't be any questions later about anything.

Remember the office door is always open. We both do a lot of work at our desks, although we'd both rather be in the lab, you can be sure. Please feel free to talk to either of us about anything that concerns you. The university has a lot of resources for students and if we can help you with anything we will do our best.
